Syllable Timing in Repetition Disfluency

چکیده

This paper investigates rhythmic patterns in 3-cycle repetition disfluency (e.g. We went to the park and1 and2 and3 watched the birds...). Results show a harmonic timing effect: in a slow-speech set of corpus data, the distribution of and2 phases relative to the and1 to and3 interval is trimodal (χ = 20.1, p < .005), with modes approximating low-order harmonic ratios (1/3, 1/2, 2/3). A task-dynamic coupled-oscillators model can represent the structure of the observed distribution as attractor-structure in a potential function, accounting for why harmonic modes are observed. Furthermore, the model can treat the ratio of oscillator amplitudes as a control parameter representing speech-rate; as this parameter is varied, higher-order modes become unstable, explaining why trimodality is not observed in a fast-speech subset of the data. In contrast to previous experimental findings of harmonic timing, the effects observed here operate on a smaller time scale and cannot be attributed to an external stimulus or self-entrainment.

Prosodic parallelism as a cue to repetition disfluency

Repetition disfluencies are among the most frequent type of disfluency in conversational speech, accounting for over 20% of disfluencies, yet they do not generally lead to comprehension errors for human listeners. We propose that parallel prosodic features in the REP and ALT intervals of the repetition disfluency provide strong perceptual cues that signal the repetition to the listener. We repo...

Prosodic parallelism as a cue to repetition and error correction disfluency

Complex disfluencies that involve the repetition or correction of words are frequent in conversational speech, with repetition disfluencies alone accounting for over 20% of disfluencies. These disfluencies generally do not lead to comprehension errors for human listeners. We propose that the frequent occurrence of parallel prosodic features in the reparandum (REP) and alteration (ALT) intervals...

School-age children with specific language impairment produce more speech disfluencies than their peers.

PURPOSE To compare the occurrence of speech disfluencies during narrative production in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and their age-matched peers. METHODS The study included 60 children aged between 7 and 10 years, 40 with typical language development and 20 with SLI. For data collection, a series of 15 stories was used, each one represented by pictures composed of four sce...

Verbal-Auditory Skills in 5-year-Old Children of Semnan/Iran in 2006

Introduction: This research was planned to determine some verbal-auditory skills (verbal-auditory short memory and phonological awareness) that have the closest relationship with speech and language development in 5-year-old children. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 400 children of pre-school classes affiliated to Education and Welfare organizations in Semnan city were select...

Characteristics of disfluency clusters in adults who stutter.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of disfluency clusters in adults who stutter (AWS) and to compare these characteristics to those previously reported for children who stutter (CWS). METHOD The spontaneous speech of ten AWS was sampled and organized according to utterance length in syllables. The overall number and type of disfluency clusters occurring i...
